Water Sports in the Tampa Bay Area

If you enjoy playing and doing fun water sports then traveling to Tampa Bay is a good choice for the water enthusiast. Pinellas Peninsula has many beaches to choose from for anyone looking to swim, dive or waterski along the offshore islands. On the bayside you have the Ben T. Davis Beach and also the Picnic Island Park that is near Port Tampa. These two beach areas draw most of the crowd on the Tampa side of the day and will be filled with people as they are having fun on the local waters.

You can check out some of the beautiful beaches along the popular island towns that include Madeira Beach, Treasure Island, North Redington Beach, and Indian Rocks Beach. These are some of the most visited resort towns near Tampa Bay, and you will plenty of choices when it comes to water activities, never mind all of the shopping and nightlife that goes on in the popular beach areas.

The park system in the area has many locations throughout the county where you can picnic, boat and enjoy some of the beautiful water as you swim. Fort Desoto Park is an area that has some of the most development in the area and is just south of St. Pete Beach.

When you travel to Hillsborough County you can check out some of the year-round 72 degree plus water that is available at Lithia Springs Park. These warm Springs feeds on the local rivers include the Alafia. You can canoe these rivers and are also some launches available for easy access to the water. This is a must stop park for the first time visitor to get a feel for local area, and what regulations you might have to deal with in the greater Tampa Bay area.

Picnic Island Park is located near one of the original camps of the Theodore Roosevelt Roughriders, and this is where they stayed during the Spanish-American war. John Chestnutt Senior Park is very popular, and used for personal watercraft as well as for water skiers, because of this swimming is prohibited within this Park and it is open year round.

Tampa Bay is also close to the Orlando area which is only about an hour's drive on Route 4 to all the Walt Disney World area and some inland water parks that include Typhoon Lagoon, the world's largest man-made wave pool. There is also plenty of golf and fishing if you want some other fun options to do if you get tired of water sports and want something else to do.
